THE SITUATION IN EUROPE.

A FINE of 2600 was imposed by Mr A. G. We on a Chinese house-proprietor, who was charged in the Police Court today, by Mr Augustus Shelton Hooper, Government valuer, with furnishing false particulare s to the rents of houses owned by him. The defendant, Pa Wing Chan, who resides at No. 64 Queen's Road Wos, in the owner of twenty-four houses, with respect to the rents of which returns were made on the Dih inst. Mr. Hooper, had found that in evory case the rent was understated, there being differences of from 6 to 834. The figures returned and those representing the actual rents were produced. Defendant's rent-collector was put into the witness-box aud corroborated Mr Hooper's statement by giving tho actual rents collected by him. Mr Hooper asked for a bezvy ponalty, as defondant had been making large profite, besides giving a great deal of trouble.
Defendant said he had told the rent collector o give the corecet returns. His Worship said, if that was the case, he deserved sym- pathy, but a fine of $25 for each house must be imposed, making a total of $600.
