THE FOREIGN TRADE OF CHINA FOR 1880.

Mr E. B. Drow, Statistical Secretary, makes the following general remarka on the foreign trade of Chinu for 1836, in thu just published Returns of Trade,' Statistical Series, Nos. 3 and 4-

If wo look mirely at the statistical totals, the impression we form will certainly be that groat prosperity has prevailed. The velumo of trade has baon na a whole the greatest sines our general statistics first bogan to be lept, now 22 rears ago There have been certain years in which the Imports of theuelves have attained a big or total, and in other years the Ex- ports have renobad'a greaters, but there has never beon a your when both sinal taneously have amounted to so much. The total value of Foreign goods imported its Native produro exported abroad is HK Tk. 164,600,003, The highest mark hitherto roached was Hk. Th. 103,300,000, in 1881. The value for 1986-the year preceding the period now specially midar review was H. Tis: 163,200,000. Aliko impression of continuing developmoutiscon- vayed by the Shipping statistics. The year 1886 marks a large and sudden increase in the number of vessels whichharuantored and 16 China's porte and in the tonnagu thus ra presented. In 1886 the number of vussala was 23,800 (in round nutabera), and tho figures have been almost exactly the same Bat for 1880 this for many years back. number has suddenly ingressed by mure And how has than 20 per cont., 65 28,020, it fared with the tonnage? The increze has been from 18,900,00 to manrly 22,000, 000 tons. The total ionnage in 1877 was 12,000,000; it rosa steadily year by your until in 1884 and 1885 is stood between 18,600,000 and 19,000,000; and now wo behold a sudden leap of 20 per cout, above the preceding year. And again, an ex mination of tho tables which show the Ro venue collected conarms the indication of prospority afforded by the trade and the stirring totale. The Revenue for 1880 is the largest as rot collected under the wis- pices of the Foreign Inspectorate, having for the first time passed the goal of 15 mil lions of tools. The sum collected in Ak Ts. 15,144,078, being nearly half a million taels greater than the collection of 1891, which hitherto has been the maximum year. All this has a very gratifying sound, but if we look deeper we shall find that while ponce and some other conditions have on- couraged a large valame husiness, this business has not been in all departinants advantageous to the producer or to the mer obant.

reinarkable and the mast gratifying feature of the year's trade, whether from the point. of view of the Native producer and the Foreign merchant, who may well be bolies- ed to have respet good results, or from the standpoint of the official, whose sense of joy in the contemplation of an increased alone. The condition of the Sugar trade should not be passed by without mention. The quantity of Sugar (White, Brown, and Uandy) exported from China to Hongkong and to more remate Foreign countries has greatly fallen off since 1834. The export of White in 1884 was 465,000 picula, and it has now declined to 129,000 peuls; that of Brown has declined from 1,020,000 picule to 458,000 piculs; and that of candy in like proportion. The Reports from fakew Swatow, and Kinngehow, in which tois trade is discussed, ascribe de decline to the following causes, viz, the imposition of new taxation in Formosa; the competition of other Sugars, capecially Javas; the infu- ence of protection given to Sugar cultivation in other counttice, even Queensland per- haps; and the drought prevalent in the Southern Sugar-producing provinces. · And both the Kiunghow and Takow Commis sioners point out the need of ting batter machinery and of improving the commu nication with local markesa
