A somewhat anddening reminder of the desolation of 1878 is found in the fuct that the wooden, verandalis of the houses burnt last night were the means of spreading the flames from house. house even after the water was turned on. Uf course, they will all be burnt in timp, and the new regulations will necessitate the erection of safer fronts to the new buildings. It seems, how- ever, that many of the houses consumed by the flames in the fire of last night would have been fronted with stone verandalis several months ago, had not some technical objection been taken by the Surveyor General to this desirable reformation. When the application was made to erect stone verandaha, it. appens that the Surveyor General's Department insisted upon a backyard also being provided to the houses in question.
