ncso, the utmost caution is necessary in carrying out the regulations under which sapplies are placed on board French vessels of war in this Harbour. Indeed, the riots of six months ago demonstrated that any high-handed or indiscreet action on the part of those identified with the French causo was calcainted to endanger the pance of the Colony. The soreness of fooling which exists among the Chinese Eins not boon improved of late by recent events; and the danger we refer to may be said to have materially increased. Such being the case, it is somewhat surprising to learn that
while coal was being supplied to the French so little caution was exercised the other day
man-of-war Duginy Trouin; and it may not
be out of place to suggest that some English officer should be told off to superintend the performance of this apparently ticklish service. If our information be reliable, the outcome of the laat rosling operation was a scuffe between the ecal-coolies and several of the French marines, to which one at loast of the coolica was slightly wounded by a bayonet. It seems that Mesars Black Lead & Co.'s coal-hulk was alongside the Duguay Trouls on the Afternoon of the 10th inst., and that seinstions ware being made by the Frenchmen of the larger Jumps, to the exclusion of the small or dross anal. This led to expostulation on the part
of the godown-kooper who was in charge High water at Whampoa: 2 hrs. 30 that the subsequent proceedings were not of the coal-hulk; and it is evident mus, later than at Hongkong at the calculated to favour an amicable sattioment, Barrier 3 h 15 mins. at the Salt
