Tax Shanghai tologram which we publish Incana that at Shanghai, the last Chinese port ut which the French flag was dying, the tricolor has given place to the Russian cato. At Tientsin this transfer was effect- ed several months ago; and now French residents: find shelter under the Russian flag throughout the Chinesa Empire. There may be algnificance in this, but we prefer to believe that the inability of the French Consula to act with Chinese offioials is a außcient explanation of the change.

THE German atonmer Olympia (Captain Christiansen) reports that she brings hero from Touron 139 Chinese passengers. Those natives were taken from s Chiness

junk which was captured by the Trouch guubcat Leenni samo eight days ago on the Annamare Const, and were banded over to the Olympia for conveyance to this Colony. Assuming that these natives are without visible moans of aubaistence, it may become a question whose duty it will to to see them maintained, or seat to their native country,

Two cases which were recently committed for trial at the Supreme Court by the Po lico Magistrate have been sent back by the Attorney General to be summarily dealt with. One of these was the car in which a broker named Ho Awai, with six previous convictions recorded against him, was found to have entered a house and searched it under the protence of being a Police In- epector, eventually walking of with two silk jackets belonging to the woman living there. He was this morning sentenced by Mr. Wise to six months' hard labour, with the first and last fourteen days in solitary confinement.

Thus other case was that of a man named Wong Tai, who was charged with highway robbery on the Shapkiwan Road on the 16th Sept. last. He was also sentenced by Mr Wise ta six months' hard labour.
