A few words will mice to point the moral of these figures. It is evident. that the weak point in the Company was, and bad always been, the enormous dis proportion between the share capital and the borrowed capital. Their liabilities under the latter head were 3, 4 and some Emes 5 times that of the former, and, that being so, they manifestly held their existence at the good will of their cro ditors. In times of great prosperity,
plan worked very well no doubt, as for instance in 1880 and 91 they were uppu- fently paying only five per cent. OF 50, while they were curcing 16 or 20 per cent. But conversely, when times are End und confidence is shaken, this pre- curious cocdition is enough to ruin any company.
