A case appeared in a recent Peking Gazette which exhibits the curious work- who had suspicions ns to his wife's ing of Chinese law, A Brevet-Colonel, fidelity, finally discovered hor and a servant in flagrante, delicto; he imme diately stabbed them both to death; in doing this he was justified by law and not liable to the slightest punishment. (Ile value of artenuating circumstances is apparently greater in China thign with e.) The Colonel should in the next pince have communicated the affair to tire local authorities, lint a very natural regard for his own reputation and for that of his family kept him back, and he quietly, buried the bodies out of the way. The matter became known and the Go-, vernor of Anhui veferred to Peking for a-tructions. The prisoner, says the memorialist, is absolved from panish- ment for killing his wife and her parn- stir, but is liable to the infletion of 80 blows for not reporting the affair. In the meanwhile, however, an Imperial proclamation of grace was issued, so that even the 80 blows could not be given.. The Governor objects to his man exca- ping in this manner and naively writes,
