Tas vivid and humorous sketches given to the world by Mrs Oliphant of the Church clergyman and the pastor of Salom Chapel are too well known to in- telligent readers to permit of muy severe dogmatic utteraneas on the connection between the Church and the State. Whatever our opinion may be on the principle involved by such a connection, no one who is not auduly influenced by sectarian prejudice can deny that the Church of England and the Church of Scotland have exercised a great power for good in the United Kingdom.
