There are other grounds upon which we have ventured, on former occasions, to differ from the extreme section of the Society for the Suppression of the Opium Trade, one of which is the right which England ban to consider the interests of the tillers of the soil in India. There are those at Home who advocate the immediate stoppage of the growth of opium in India; but there persoas do not consider for a moment the misery which so sweeping a change would bring about. The restriction in the use of the drug must come first, with a like reduction in the demand; and doubtless both India and China would be more healthy and prosperous were the supply
