opera being frequent and most enthu." sjastle,
The performance of Italian Opera in Hongkong finds so many consistent supporters, that Signor Cagli's announce ment of a second series of Subscription Operatio representations will doubtless give universal satisfaction, and meet with the substantial ort the enter prise undoubtedly deserves. The operna announced in the second series are La Traviata, Rigoletto, and La Forza del Destino, by Verdi, Bellini's Norma, Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini, sad a repetition of the Brothers Ricci's cele- brated buffo extravaganza Crispino e la Compre, a suficiently varied assort ment to meet the views of the majority of play-goers it must be admitted, al- though the sickly sentimentality and not overcleanly tendencies of La Tra viata will hardly render that particular work popular in stich an immaculata and saintly corner of the globe, as Hongkong. All the fragrant streams of Verdi's charming music, unless backed up by the transcendant genins of Patti, almost invariably fail to wash out the prurient hastiness of Dames file, there fare, filghly as we esteem the merits of Signora Gerolini, and Signora Milani Vela, we hardly consider either of these ladies likely to succeed in making "La dame sux Camélias" a success, where
primas of European reputation have but too frequently failed. Nous verrena
To return to La Favorita. The cast on the present.occasion differed only in one instance from that when the opera was, produced here a year ago, namely the substitution of Bignor Buganini for nando, Signora Genolini in her imper- Signer Sbriscia in the tenor role of Fer- sonation of Leonore again demonstrated the vast improvement she has made in her art during twelve months' absence from Hongkong. Not only bas her Foios strengthened so wonderfully as to enable her to sing the florid music of a difficult role like Leonors with perfect. ease and considerable fluency but in purity and correctness of style the für artiste has made vest progress, 63 compared with her former efforts in the same part. The low movement in the ever-popular Ab, mio Fernando" was sung with such exquisite, taste, as to in voke the most enthusiastic applause, and t the same high standard of excellence was maintained throughout the representa- tion. The Signora was equally success- fal as actress and vocalist, Her con- ception of the character, and the consistent and natural manner in which her ideal was worked out, evidenced careful study and genuine artistic abilityAs we did not hesitate last year to point out and condemn many and serious defects in Signora Gaiolini's efforta sa a high class operatic artiste, it gives us now, an infinite deal of plea sure to be able to accord the high praise contained in the foregoing remarks. Signor Bagagiolo, announced on the programme to appear as Gaspare, re peated his impersonation of Baldassare. This character is a great favourite with bastoe, and generally can be made about the most effective in the opera Always 8 painstaking and conscientious worker, Signor.. Bagagiolo did wonders with Baldassare and although his voice is scarcely strong enough in the lower register to do everything possible with basan profondo pasts, it is suficiently powerful to enable him to show bis capacity to tackle basso centrale rélés with marked ncces. We can heartil commend the Signor's ne acting, and generally correct vocalisation.
When Signor Bergamaschl first appeared AS Alfons XI. we had to find fault with him for wearing a perpetual, bowl on his face, fliroughout the while perform ance, and we regret to see that the habit, although toned down, is yet muli too consplotons. Beyond than his ins personation was everything that could he-wished, showing great dramatie power, and most accomplished tion. A tanto amar rendered
