deadlock, the inconvenience in many cases savours of injustice. As we have previously stated, the fact that Mr Gibbons demanded a public inquiry over six weeks ago at the hands of the Executive makes the situation all the more incomprehensible. There must be something radically wrong somewhere, and there is evidently the utmost need for a public investigation; yet the Hend of the Executive mores not with his usual promptitude. What can be the mening of all this hesitancy? is the question upon the lips of every one. But no satisfactory answer is forthcoin- ing, and anarchy is left to work its sweet will in the place of ull places where order and decurum ought to reign.
The business of our Supreme Court,
in the departments especially Bankruptcy and the management of moneys belonging to deceased persons, has already formed the subject of severe comment, of grave consideration, and of various proposals for refum. It was supposed by many that the appointment of Mr Gibbons as Registrar, by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, was the measure intended exigencies of the case. That this plan of reform has been in a certain sense frustrated is a fact which calls most un- mistakeably for the fullest investigi tion; and whoever is proved to be in fault ought to bear the responsibility of this lamentable state of affairs. And this leads us to consider what we cannot hut characterise as the very feeble case wgainst the fullest publicity sought to be It niade out by the Puisno Judge. cannot be questioned, we venture to think, that much of the fraud that hus
