THERE can be no doubt that any reasonable means for the establishment of the Volunteer Fores upon a sound basis ought to receive the support of the community. The question, therefore, whether a concession should or should not be made to every efficient member of the Corps, in the form of exemption from the Jury, is one that deserves dus consideration. It would, in the first place, be on incentive to afficiency-as suming, of course, that Jury service is a kind of duty which most residents would rather leave to some one else; and, secondly, it would be a sort of acknowledgment on the part of the Go- vernment, the Court and the community that volunteering is a species of servico done for the public. In view of the possibility that the non-volunteering Jurors might feel aggrieved at the over- work thrown upon them by such an arrangement, some provision might be made to equalise this apparent hardship. Volunteers might be made liable to serve ones a year only, and non-Vo lunteers might be allowed to crave exemption after having served say two For three times during that period. Tha idea is, we think, a good one, although it may be necessary to modify it to suit the aircumstances of the Colony.
