We do not intend wearying our readers to day with a long regital of those core- monies and superstitions so closely con nected with this season of the year, which have already been so frequently and ably. described by most writers on Chinese matters; if we refer to them at all, it will be rather to record some local custom not yet fully understood, or to bring out a few of the usages peculiar to one par ticular locality. But we wish first to call attention to some peculiar coinci dences connected with the division of time, to which sufficient attention has not yet been called. The Chinese yaar has had its vicissitudes, as has the year of the Romans, the Polynesians and others By this we mean that the year has not gone on evenly from the earliest ages, claiming as its right an even num ber of months each of so many days.

The sun, moon and stars in their couraos have fought for the mastery, and at one time ono nystem, a another time another has gained the ascendency. We will ex- plain our meaning; but may first mako a note respecting, the etymology of the word nan, a year. In its present form it
