We have received a copy of a "State- ment by the Directors of the P. & O. 8. N. Company, regarding the India, China and Australian Mail Contracts, which places the position of the old Com pany fairly before the public. It may; we believe, be asserted with safety that, although ever ready to scold at and grumble over the shortcomings of the P. & O., the large majority of those con- cerned entertain the conviction that the mails could not be carried so satisfactorily by any other company in the field. The arrangement by which separate tenders could be received for different portions of the contract was one which at first seemed to inspira a hope that new blood might be infused into the mail services

This latter fact is not so very important now that the scant consideration of the Postmaster General has not been sano tioned. The four toaders made for the contract are thus compared (1) George Smith and Sons, at the rate of 16/2 per mile; (2) The Sun Ship- ping Company, at 12/11 per mile; (3) Alfred Holt, at 9/10 per mile; and (4) P, and O., at 9/6 per mile. The accepted tender gives a speed of 10 knots from Suez toShanghai; while Mr Holt's cheaper tender (via Bombay) gave only a speed of 10 knots on that section of the route. While giving every weight to the vin- dication of the P, and O. Company here. laid before the public, however, we think the most complete vindication will be found in the satisfactory performance of
