From and after the taking of these oaths Dr. Eitel's interpretations would be authorita tive throughout the Colony. THERE are two cases of interest to the

The Tarantohess say that the present state of affairs is the direct consequence of the Ruselan occupation of the li district, and that the provlace of this name, like Kashger, would in no way fall a prey to the Chinese, even if the Kuldja Tarantchers were not under the protectorate of Russia. In case of necessity they would ally themselves with the Kash. garians and offer an energetic resistance to the Chinese. In the event, too, of an un fortunate lesue to the Kuldfa question the Tarantchees, according to their declaration to the chief of the northern part of the Kuldja district, despising all danger and loss of property, will lay down their lives in battle with the Chinese rather than see their wives and daughters insulted and brought under subjection to the Celestials. The alarming rumours of the surrender of Kuldja, therefore, should it really be surrendered to the Chinese, would bring about such a terrible state of things in the Ill province that the interference of Bussia, The local officials absolutely necessary. furthermore affirm that the Khirghiz, on the Chinese frontier, will undoubtedly come to the assistance of their brethren in faith oppressed by the Chinese, and the matter would not be got over without much bloodshed.
