Mission work is perhaps making as steady progress in this locality as in any other part of the Empire-owing, it may be conjec tared, to traditions still existing, of the influenos once exercised by the old teachers, But Christianity at the best, has made but little way in this country. The Japanese Are now too engrossed with the material side of western civilisation to devote much attention to the philosophic side of life although the day may not be far distent, when a radical change will be witnessed.
