The effect was brilliant and beautiful and striking in the extreme, and the large com- pany seemed greatly to prefer, roaming about amid those thousand lights to staying in the Reception roms. The Governor and Mrs Hennessy walked round frequently amid their numerous guests, His Excellency with Mrs Grant, and General Grant with Mra Hepatay.
The American Star, a large design in gas, or the north dle of Govern- ment House, was greatly admired. fairy-like beauty of the scene could scarcely have been enhanced. The lovely dresses of Mrs. Young, M. the ladies, the bright and varied uniforms of the oficers of diferent nationalities present, the delightful music of the band, the merry laughter coming from various groups in different portions of the grounds, altogether made up a pleasing, lively and beautiful sono. It was not till nearly midnight that the com- pany began to thin, and by a few minutes after that hour the guests had departed, the visitors were in-doors, the lamps "burnt low, and dence and darkness again assumed their sway. Galena, to the capture of Richmond and the surrender of the rebel army, I was in a small way mixed up in public affairs in England, an a nem- ber of that assembly the power of which, for good or evil, is not confined within the bounds of England's Sovereignty. It is now a matter of history that in both Houses of the British Parliament there were fdenda and fos of Fredom, but we may recall with pride the fact that two men so diverso in person and disposition and party rela- tions as John Bright and Benjamin Dis. raeli, were angations enough to know that the honour of their own Country and the welfare of the World were associated with the cause for which Ulysset Grant was con- tending. Whilt Bright as repairing the blunders of one or two eminent men of the Liberal party, the great Conservative Ohlel was, to my own personal knowledge, labouring night and day to counteract tunreasoning prejudice amongst his own followers, and is ever to me a source of intense satisfaction that, though in a very humble way no doubt, I was one of those members of the House of Common who logaly supported his prudent and patriotic policy. But this is not the only pemunal reason that is present to my mind to-night. 1 am a citizen of Cork. I come from that corner of the Old World, nearest, and not leasi dear, to the United States and on behalf of my fellow citizens I now mure General Grant that in no part of the civilie ed globe would he have revived a heartier welcome, if he had honoured as with a -viziḥ, than in my untivo city. I now invite
you to drink his bealth, and will ask you Mrs. Adams, bot to forget the charming lady at my Arnholdy. right, and her family; for, within the Inat few minum, a telegram bas reach. ed them from London, announcing the birth of a grandi-child, so that General Grant, though still comparatively a young man, younger indeed to-day than was Washington when he first became President, bas, as a grandfather, neded another little ljuk to unite the two countries together. 1 give you, with all my heart, the health of General Granty.
General Grant, In reply, raid I am very grassful to you for your kind addies, to. which 1 would be happy to respond, but there is so much personal and flattering to myself that I And it imposible. It is only a continuance of the kidneng that I have received not only in England, but in India, and in the British colonies; wherever in fast, I have met Englishmen, I have met nothi lug but courtey, hospitality, and goods will to my vit sud my quntry, Apoy
