The Sports to-day were unfortunately not a success. This was not owing to any bad management on the part of the pro- moters, nor from any lack of competitors, or of interest displayed. The arrangements were admirable in every partlouisr, the ground was well kept, good and ample accommodation was provided for the ladies and the several events came off with regularity and precision, Still the Sports were not a success, and the unfavourable weather was the sole cause of the failure. The Inspector went there and believed that the alarm was occasioned by the gamblers making their epaaie over the roofs. The trap-door was of teak-wood and about three inches in thickness, and fitted with a spring-look. The defendunt was found concealed on the roof, -

THE RULE OF THE ROAD. A Correspondent thus writes to us with reference to collisions at sea-
I was much interested in reading the letter to the Times which appeared in your issue of the 16th February over the signature of Captain P. H. Colomb, n.x. The ques- tion of the Rule of the Road is a very deli- cato one, and presents so many phases that much must be left to the judgment and skill preof the navigator. But that is a subject I must leave to others better able than I am to discuss.
I ask, however, to be allowed to contribute my humble mite with a view to lessening the chances of collisions, by attracting attention to the very absurd manner in which steering directions are given to the helmsman
