Tax telegram we published yesterday is in some degree corroborative of our conjectures that only a moiety of the 24th Regiment has been annihilated, and that the unfortunate Battalion on which this disaster has fallen is the First, MÍn point of fact, the telegram we published from our Singapore contemporary a few days ago, stating that five hundred Bri- tish soldiers and sixty British officers had been killed, can leave little doubt that one battalion only of the Registent bas been nearly annihilated. Most likely each of the two Battalions of the Regiment numbered over 500 men, with about thirty officers, and the absurdity of
it had lost only 500 men out of a thou "almost completely annihilated," when Band, would be about equalled by des patching along the wires the announce ment that a Regiment had been “almost completely annihilated" when only one of the two Battalions, both serving in the same campaign, had been attacked. Reuter has fallen into one or the other of these errors, Time will show which.

Yesterday's telegram is slightly cor roborative of our conjecture that the lat Battalion is the unfortunate one, mr17 because it appears to make special reference to the particular force with which that Bettalion was serving. Pear son's column, which we now learn bus entrenched itself at Ekowe, included the lat Battalion of the 24th Regiment, the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Buffs, and probably some other English troops, as well as
This a native contingent oolumn was to advance into Zululand from Fort Williamtona fortified position, situated on the river dividing Natal from Zaluland, a few miles from its month. This column vas most likely the weakest of the two or three that had taken the offensive. It had penetrated some distance into the Zulu country, when it, or a portion of it, was sorrounded by an overwhelming boat, of these famous Kaffir warriors.
That a desperate resistance was offered is shown' by the number of Cettewayo's braves reported as having been killed. To an- nihilate a few more battalions of the British army on similar conditions would probably cost the Zulu King his entire force of disciplined warriors.

The number of officera killed, is out of all proportion to the number of rink and file. Probably many of the gallant fellows lost their lives while command- ing the native contingents. It is a pity that Reuter has been so sparing in his advices regarding this event, to may nothing of correctness, The matter was one of far greater importance than a motion by Sir Charles Dilke condemn. atory of the war, or elaborate details of the formation of the new French Minis. try: Not only is it distressing in itself | to learn that a severe disaster has been fnflicted on the British forces in the Cape, and that the important Colony of Natal has been placed in great danger, but the mishap that has befallen General Thesiger's troops will probably result in the expenditure of one or two additional millions of money on the part of the British Government. It would, at all- events, be interesting to learn something. more regarding the great danger that la said to be threatening the Colony of Natal,
