THE successor to Colonel Pang, at Kow- Loong, is at present on a visit to this Colony. It would be a good thing if the authorities here could concert measures for repressing such operations as the Hong- ham raid.

FIRE AT BPRING GARDENS, Shortly after one o'clock this morning, the fire-bell rang out its unwelcome alarm. Weary sleepers arose reluctantly from their warm beda to battle with the fiery element, an enemy we have good resin to dread in Hongkong. All were more or less wearled with the excitement of the last three days, so that it was not with very Uvely feelings that sleepers obeyed the summons which planged forth on the still atmosphere. The position of the fire was easily ascertained by the ruddy glare in the sky, and a stampede was made Eastward. It proved to be a

THE Race Meeting just concluded has, we think, been one of the quietest but at the same time most enjoyable gather ings of the kind that have been ex perienced in Hongkong for many years. Doubtless those who found the results of the races entirely contrary to their expectations, and fatal to hopes founded on promising drawings in the "Sweeps," will feel somewhat disinclined to endorse this opinion, but we trust that these unfortunate gentlemen are few, and that their speculations were not of a very for midable character, it must at all events be admitted that better weather for the gatherings could scarcely be desired, and 10 element

to his being on duty the room door was shut and locked, and there had been no light or fire in the roon all the evening. When the door was opened the room was found to be in a complete mass of flames, and the windows were wide open, circumstance gave rise to the suspicion that the fire was the work of incendiaries, and it certainly appeare a not at all unlikely thing, as, considering the duties Mr Mul- graves has to perform, he is not likely to make many friends amongst the rascaldom of this Colony, and such a method of vant- ing their spite would be quite in accordance with the Chinese character. Another sus- picious circumstance is that Ave men were arrested for entering Mr do Silva's house next door, and stealing a box of jewellery and other articles. They were brought before the Maglatrate to-day and re- manded. Mr da Silva, it appears, WAN more neces- alarmed for the safety of his family and sary to the success of a Race Meet left his house to place them in safety.
