A CORRESPONDENT of the Times has called attention to a practios of long standing in the English Davy which, he complaine, involvos the destruction every time a man- of war is put out of commission of a number of fittings which in many instances have cost altogether a countderable sum of money, and to the designing and completion of which much time and trouble have in every case been given. When a ship is handed over by the dockyard authorities to the officer appointed to commission her, there is no hing at all in the way of ornament sbrusher. All her fittings are strong and arviceable, but perfectly plain-repulsively plain in the eyes of those whose home the vessel is to be for the next three or four years, Consequently, the same instinct which leads shore-going folk to decorate their h uses, to palat and paper and hang pictures on their walls, and fill their room. with faraiture which is far more costly than it would be were it made for use only without regard to appearance, leads the Bailor also to wish to beautify the interior of bis vessal. Accordingly, it has come to be a recognized practice for the carpenter. and his men to devote their best energias during the commission of a ship to orna
The work is carried on monting her. under the direction of the commander or first lieutenant of the vessel, who also finds most of the money to buy the fancy wood, paint, polish, varnish, ro, required. By the time the commission is over pretty gratings will have been substituted for the plain panels round the ladderways; the cap. stau will have been inlaid and polished ; and carving, varnished or gilded, and brasswork will have taken the place of plain mould ings and iron. In a word, the interior of the ship will be highly, and it must be added generally very tastefully, ornamented.' But before the work of decoration is well finished the ship is paid off; dookyard. labourera come on board, and immediately the work of demolition begins. Everything that has been added to the ship to make her look pretty is pulled down, ruthlessly broken up, and thrown aside as rabbish. No attempt is made to keep anything for the next commission. The vessel is strip- ped, and every fitting not of the service pattern is destroyed. Against this wanton destruction protest is made in the letter quoted, and with the substance of the pros test every naval offer will cordially agree.
