came witness managed to get out of the house in the confusion that ensued, and he went and hid behind a house while his wife made a great outery. An Indina constable deposed that on being called to the house, he found the complainant standing at the door and she told him there was a thief inside. He then en- tered the house, and, finding the prisoner there, arrested him. Subsequently his sittention was directed to four men, who were in a boat about twenty yards from the beach. He fired two shots at them, thinking their object was to attack the village, but whether he bit any one of them or not he did not know.ads

Some evidence was then brought to light in regard to the motives of pri- soner and his companious for these singular operations. The complainant's husband stated that his father was then in prison at Kowloon. The reason for his imprisonment he did not know, but probably at was to enable a squeeze to be made. His father formerly lived in Tamsui, but had recently been living at Kowloon City. About a week ago the prisoner and others met witness in the street at Shan-ki-wan, and the prisoner Normanby leaves for Singa- told him that if he wanted his father re pore, dro
