Let us take the case of foreigners first. It may be argued that if the loading and unloading of vessels in the harbour are prohibited on Sundays that the ship. owners will suffer considerable loss, and that trade will be delayed. This appears to be the only argument that can be advanced in favour of seamen, and people directly concerned in the shipping trade of this port, being compelled to labour on Sundays. To us it appears to be no argument at all in view of parallel cir cumstances around us. The argument will apply equally to the Chinese. It is sonsense to argue that if Chinese be prohibited from working on Sundays that a hardship will be in fioted upon contractors and othern Wo believe that if these people properly understood the matter they would welcome the introduction of one day's rest in the seven as much as their em ployés. If Sunday labour were suddenly prohibited here it might be that o tractors, but not shop-keepers or mer phants, would experience a little diminu«, tion of their profits under existing contracts, through a longer time being required for their completion, but we have anffinient confidence in the kesti- 11 am. due allowance was made for 81 days labour per week, instead of seven, in the next contract into which he entered, He, as well as his men, would also rap the physical and moral benefit the road on Sundays would afford him. Religion need not be brought into the question at all. As Government has legislated for certain Bank holidays, so can it legislate for one day's rest in the seven. It han legislated for the stopping of business and labour at home on Sundays, and there is no good reason why it cannot do the name in this Colony, especially as we have shown it would confer a benefit on all, and inflict hardship on no one. This is the idea of civilised nations, and, as this Colony is owned and governed by th civilised nation, we can see no valid ob- jection to western views being carried out here.
