We publish in another column some interesting telegramos, taken from the Indian papers, relating to the campaign ia Afghanistan. These telegrams clear. "P, to some extent, the perplexing state in which Reater's telegrams left the operations of General Roberts and General Brown. The last we heard of the Kurram force was that, after having disastrously defeated the Ameer's troops at the Peiwar Pass, it had arrived at Shutar Gurdan on the 14th December. Since then we have heard nothing more
appears likely to be confined to the British and Afghan forces. There are no signs of Russia giving her late protégé a helping hand.
The Committee expressed their thanks, and H. E. the Governor addressed in reply a few words to them, reminding them that in their common anxiety to relieve the poor he himself and the Committee were but follow ing out the duty enjoined by Jesus Christ as well as by the Sages of China, that Jesus Christ was himself one of the poor on earth and taught his disciples prastically to love and relieve the poor, and that some of the highest social principles enjoined by Chris tianity were brotherly love and charitable relief. The Committee, after quoting some kindred passages from the Chinese Classies, withdrew.
