Neva was kept well in hand, and towards the close of the rane her crew put on spurt and evidently meant business, but the leader's crew were as fresh as ever and maintained their advantage; winning a very pretty race by about one length. SECOND DAY,

TUESDAY, 24TH DECEMBER, 1878- The weather to-day was warmer, and the water was perfect for rowing, but the wind was moarcely so steady for the sailing races as that of yesterday, though It freshened. latterly into a fair breeze, There wad a fair attendance on board the Flagship, though the ladies did not grace the sports In as great numbers as on the Ladies' Purés day. His Excellency and party visited the Flagship several times, and appeared to take great interest In the proceedings, The time was kept better to-day than on the previous day, the first race starting

at past 1; and the Tron Diske rado, which did not take place owing to the non-arrival of the Flagship, was substituted by a punt race-a very amusing item in the programme.

Bunting appears to be scarce amongst the shipplug at present, as hardly a vessel in harbour showed a rag on the occasion. It may be that the Regatts spirit has left the port, and judging by the appearance of things it will require some reauroitation. Bo far as rowing was concerned, this year's Regatta has been a most signal falluro especially as regards sculling; and the ➤ main interest at this meeting has been

the calling-boat and yacht racing.

One

of the finest and most exciting events of this or any year was the finish of the race for the larger yachts," when the old her Naiad snatched the prize from faster rival by three short seconde, after the cup seemed to have been almost safe. This was the redeeming point of interest in the Regatta of 1878,

Mrs Hennessy, at the loss of the day's aquatlo proceedings, presented the prizes to the fortunate winners; after which three cheers were given for Mrs Hennosey, the Governor, the Ladies, the Chairman of the Committee, and the Secretary. Shortly after tho driel passed the winning post, the Fame came alongside, and the Regatta

Neva bad outside place, and with both wind and tide in their favor had a decided advantage. Her coxswain was quite alivo to this fact and kept well out side. That Oswald's wrow pulled well there could be no two opinione, and had both boats been favored with the same advantages as regarde tide Woodin's crew would have probably had to record a defeat, as it was they had all their work cut out. From the Starter's launch it at first ap peared that Neva was being steared too far out, but it was soon apparent that the co1-1 swain knew what he was about. Woodla was pulling 35 strokes and Oswald 88, Neva won a really tight rase by a good two | lengths.

The yachts wore favoured with the mort unexpectedly good weather for calling. At 12 o'clock to-day the harbour was very similar to a mill-pond, but hardly had the yachts got under way when a fine breeze aprang up, fresh enough to satisfy the most ardent of the small fry at all events,

Some delay was occasioned at the start through the boats not being in their places, owing to a lack of breeze and perhaps, a little lack of energy on the part of their chief mates. The start was effected at 1.40 p.m. exactly, Naomi and Naiad got a capital start togother, Wart and Loiterer, seeming for some time as if they

It is the fact that they The flag-ship was passed, in the third had no vessel of their own, but that they boarded one, and made ane of the crow work it, which raises a suspicion as to whether round, as follows;

they were really pirates at all. It is extraordinary that in a raid so important the robbers should not have lost one prisoner, for the man in custody seems to have been arrested only on auspicion. Perhaps the forethought of the pirates, who carefully extinguished the gas in Wing Lok-atreet and the neighbour ing lanes may have been rewarded by this impunity. Happily the booty sarried off was scarcely enough to repay the expense and trouble of Chinaman who “* go on vik- ing" in the midst of a modern town. The Hongkong pirates do not scom to have come under the suspicion of being foreign emissaries.
