9 p.m.-Profesor Marco Vitz's Magical Performance at Garrison Theatra, *** Opera Bouffe at the City Ball, SUNDAY, December 15:-

Speaking of the trade of China gene- rally, we learn that the characteristic feature affecting the trade of the year has been the famine in North China and the general depression caused by the out- break of war in Europe. The famine does not appear to have had the injurious influence on the trade carried on in foreign vessels ono might have expected without a detailed examination of facts, the extent of trade at the ports adjoining the famine districts having suffered a slight decrease only. The articles of foreign import most affected by the calamity were cotton piece goods. In dian opium rather gained than lost in consequence of bad poppy crops in the north. Trade at the ports generally showed in fact no important fluctuation, notwithstanding the famine and the state of affairs in Europe.

I regard to imports, there was some excitement in opium. Large:: profits were made by importers, and great losses were experienced by native purchasers. The trade in cotton piece goods was, we are told, characterised by the increased adulteration of Manchester goods, and a diminished demand, subsequent to the poverty in the famine-stricken provinces, at some of the Yangtze and zorthern ports. There was, however, an increased demand for cotton handkerchiefs and American drills, jeans and sheetings, The year was a satisfactory one for the trade in woollens, Metals ahoehow an important rise in importation at nearly all the ports. Foreign coal was imported in quantities hitherto not reached, Native coals show an increase in the quantities which left the coal ports in foreign vessels; a defloit in the exporta tion at Tamsai was made up by an verplus in that from the Yangtze ports. Several of the minor articles of import, as watches, kerosene oil, and window glass, gained considerably in importance on the Chinese market.”

As to exports, silk experienced a bad year, owing to the depressed state of the market in Europe, and a combination of circumstances. Silk piece goods were, however, largely exported The tea year was a good one as regarde quantity
