Apparently some considerable modif cations have been made in the original, plabe prepared for the repair and re. construction of the Praya. The recom mendations of the Praya Commission, on which the original plans were based, were that the present sea wall from the Gan Works to White's Lane (near the Contral Fire Station) should be repaired and where necessary rebuilt, At an estimated cost of $55,000. From White's Lane to the Government Pier the Praya was to be wholly rebuilt in a moet substantial manner, at an estimated cost of $105,400. The widening of this portion of the Praya was also recom- mended, at an estimated cost of $12,500. Prays East was to be repaired at a cost- of $20,000. Apropos of the proposal to widen the Praya a scheme was at one time brought before the Government, but finally shelved, for reclaiming extensive picoss of land along the whole face of the to the Slaughter Houte, filling up the Praya westward of the F, & 0, Offices
indentations, thus, getting rid of the sharp points, and making, in short, the Praya, within the length indicated, run in straight lines. These reclamations were to he made at the expense of the marine lot-holders, except at the outlets of the streets, in consideration of the land reclaimed bang leased to them for building or other purposes. The reola- mations at the outlets of the streets would, of course, be made at the expense of the Government, We believe the consent of nearly the whole of the marine lot-holders was obtained to this scheme, but, unfortunately, difficulties' cropped up which led to its being ultimately shelved. In the first place the Govern. mant Surveyor wanted a more subatan. tial and costly sea-wall than the holders

would materially suffer by an extension of the Prays, their business premises being thrown further from the sea. It seems almost a pity, however, that this scheme was abandoned.
