supplies for carrying on the struggle." No doubt this suggestive order will bo Promptly acted upon. It is to be hoped, however, that our contemporary has not overlooked the provision of supplies at the port to be seized, and the annihila tion of the King of Annam's gunboats, to say nothing of those of France.
It seems utterly impossible that any Chinese General, able to raise around- him considerable bands of desperadoes can be insane enough to attempt the overthrow of the reigning sovereign of Annam, knowing as he must, that the French are bound by solemn treaty to afford him, on his dewand and gratuit- ously, the necessary means for maintain- ing order and tranquility in his state, and defending it against all attacks, Neverthelem we continue to hear from
private sources that come such hopeless expedition is on foot, and that a con- siderable amount of misery may result from it. It is said, however, that strict orders are issued by him to his men not to massors or plunder in the towns which they occupy, although it in ques must have around him, barbarian orders tionable If, among the free-boaters he
of that nature would be observed. The rebellion in Heînan also does not yet appear to have been obesked. Latest advices from Hoihow state that the rebels have now successfully attacked but that soldiers are being despatched to and occupied a place called Chu-man,
engage them.
We observe that Mias Ricketts, the lady who, it was stated in the home papera, had resigned the membership of the Brighton School-board in order to under- take mission work in China, has arrived in Yokohama ea routs to either this port or Bhanghai, and has already delivered two addresses in the rooms of the Yoko- hama Christian Association. Miss Rick-
etta appears to be rather enthusiastic on missionary matters. In the course of one of her addressee, she said that "if English and American seamen did their duty as Christian men when travelling round the heathen world, there would be no necessity for sending missionaries they themselves ought to be the mission- aries, and there were enfilaient people in that room, if possessing a true Christian spirit, to evangelise the whole of Japan. It was a dreadful thing to look at the heathen places visited by people who map of the world and use the dazk
went to those places simply for their own selfish ends, and without taking a ray of light with them."
It would be no doubt a happy state of affairs, and a vast amount of money would be saved, if British and American Beamen would, as suggested, do their duty and supplant paid missionaries in this and other parts of the two hemis pbaren, but we fear that in a general way Miss Ricketta" proposition is Jarosly practicable. The last time we beheld a genuine British sesinan, he wES PRO menading the public thoroughfare in a ratherserpentine fashion, with his boots in
entwined round his neck, while two of y- his comrades were performing a furionis jig in the rear. It was obvious he might have been better employed; but, it is much to be regretted that, taken asa body, British and American seamen, naval or merchant, are not well adapted for missionary labours. Nor does it, un happily, appear probable that they will
