I have calculated his wages at the rate of £3.10 per month. He was disrated two months after leaving New York. He was incompetent to perform his duty as carpenter. The entry was put in the log and read to him. It was not read to him at the time, but before reaching Anjer. I was not aware that thene entries bad to read at the time they were made. CANTONESE PLANTS-PAPER No. 4.
In future these papers will be numbered; and we take this opportunity of reminding our readers that Paper No. 3 appeared in the "Mail" of the 1st July and contained an important list of addenda and corrigonda for Papers Nos. 1 and 2, which appeared upon the 10th and 20th of June, respectively. In this Paper we have adhered to our plan, set forth in Paper No. 3, of marking the tones in exceptional places only: in this instance such exceptional instances are Nos, 103, 104, 132 and 134; in all other cases the words must be read with the tones of Eitel's improved Tonis Dictionary. In the cases of Nos. 103, 114 and 128, it will be noticed (seo Nos. 4, 13, 24, in Paper 1) that the Chinese are in the habit of giving separate names to varieties not noticed by European botanists. Where, as in the case of No. 109, the addition of a colour is the only distinctiva fantor, the various colours are simply bracketed in the character column. Double names are only given when one name is as common as the ether, or when one name is used by the ruatics, and another by the druggists orherbalists. The name given by Gaertner to No. 112 is inserted, although no other botanist has followed his lead, in order that so well-known a fruit may not be left out in the cold. Hanee is of opinion that this fruit is not a monstrosity of U. decumano, Lina., as asserted by Bentham and Hooker, but rather of the oltron C. medica, Lian. Where it has been discovered, after a plant has appeared in these lists, that it has two well-known Chinese names, the plant is made to appear again, in order that such a fact may not be lost sight of. Such is the case with No. 113. Where, as in the case of Nos. 126 and 148, two botanical names are gir en, it is in this instance, and will be so arranged that the better or older authority shall appear first, Where a Chinese character is enclosed in brackets, it is of no consequence whether suck oharacter be used or omitted. No. 148, known to rustics as given under No. 99, and to draggists as given here, was supposed by Bentham to be the only Xanthium, .. strumarium. Wallroth however, correctly according to Hance, makes a new species, which he calls discolor. As to Kanthoxylon alatum, compare No. 99. It is possible that some orrection upon this point will be required again as our lists advare. It presente however, it appears that No. 149 is as given here, and No. 99 as corrected in Paper 3. The character, No. 48, Paper 1, should be enclosed in brackets.
