WM. H. BRERETON, Esq.
HIS Company has been formed for the purpose of carrying on the Business of Sugar Refiners under the Weinrich Patent, and also the Business of Sugar Refiners, Manufacturers and Sugar Dealera generally at Hongkong and Swatow.in Ühics.
By the Weinrich process the molasses and other impurities are speedily and inexpensively removed, leaving the resi- dzam a fine Bugar fit for domestic use or for exportation to any part of the world. It is highly valued and sought after by Chinese and Japanese merchants. These Sugars are perfectly in odorous, and retain their colour and high saccha rive qualities for any length of time, and they are not liable to absorb moisture.
It is intended that the new Company shall take over the ground and buildings at Hongkong, now occupied by the Oriental Sugar Rehnery, with the Plant and Machl- nary therein. The ground, which has a water frontage of nearly 200 feet, som- prises nearly two sores. The Buildinga and Works are quite new and in completa order, capable of refining about 1,000 pictis of raw Sugar daily. It is also intended to take over the ground and premises belong- ing to the Company at Swatow in China, with the valuable Flant and Machinery thereon. The last mentioned ground con- tains about 18 acres, with excellent Irontage, and is otherwise eligibly state
you will allot me that number, and I agree to become a Member of the Company in respect of saab Shares or in respect of any less number you may allot me; and to pay the further sums men- tioned in the Prospectus and Articles of Association of the Company, and I request that my name may be placed on the Re. gister of Members for the Shares so al

His Excellency appends a minute to the Acting Inspector's communication en tirely approving of his recommendations, and expressing His Excellency's opinion that the interest evinced by the vil lagers of Wong-nai chong in the teaching of English and in the improvement of the village school is most satisfactory.
We have heard nothing lately of the proposed volunteer movement. The - Portuguese seem to have responded with alacrity to His Excellency's invitation to enrol themselves for the defence of the Colony, but up to the present no similar appeal has been addressed to the more strictly foreign section of the com munity. If the movement is to be inaugurated, now is the time, when some thing more than rumours of war are flying round, and the possibility of a hostile demonstration against Hongkong is a common past prandizem subject for discussion. The service most likely to be of value in the defence of Hongkong against hostile araisers would, we ima gine, be artillery, and, if a volunteer corps be formed, a portion of it at least will have to devote itself to the manipulation of big guns. In the old volunteer corps, the Portuguese, we believe, were chiefly riflemen, while
