mon on the mainland. Here, however, as elsewhere the intelligence of the death of the head of a family is communicated speedily as possible to all his relatives, and the household is dressed in white- the mourning colour of China. Priests and women hired to mourn are sent for at the same time, and on their arrival a table is set out with meats, fruits, lighted candies and joss sticks for the delectation of the souls of the deceased, and a mighty" wailing and weeping by the mourning women, religved at intervals by the in- toned prayers of the priest, or the dis cordant "tom-toming" of "musicians," who have also been called, to assist in the coremónies, begins. The women weep and lament with an energy and dolefalness which, if genuine, would be highly commendable, but ungenerous "barbarians" of extensive acquaintance with the Chinese assert that this ep- parently overwhelming grief is, at least in the majority of cases, mere sham In regard to the nearest relatives of the deceased it would be uncharitable to pre- sume there is not a considerable amount
of real grief beneath all this weeping and wailing, but hired mourners, who are asually the most demonstrative on theks occasions, can hardly be expected to launch every other day into convulsive lamentations of a genuine nature aver the death of individuals they hardly know by name. As it is, the priest usually directs the weeping and wailing much in the same way as a conductor controls the performance of a band of Goods per Geelong undelivered after this musicians; now we have a few irregular buy date subject to rent, “

These structures are, we believe, erected for two reasons-first because strange families in a house" ob- feat on superstitious grounds, to a carpen being taken through their rooms and, secondly, because it is almost impractic able to get a heavy Chinese coffin down the narrow tortuous stairs of many native houses in the Colony, For a similar reason no body in course of transportation from one part of China to another for the purpose of interment is allowed to pass through any walled town. No corpse is also ever allowed to be carried across a landing place, or to pass through a gateway, which can in the Emperor. The Chinese are, indeed, any way be constrized as pertaining to
so superstitious in regard to death, as seldom to mention
that word itself, preferring to take refuge in a circumlocution, auch, for instance, as "having become immortal? Sir John Davis tells us that on the occasion of a deceased officer from a British ship being taken ashore for burial at Macao, the sailors were proceeding with the coffin up the steps leading to the Chinese Custom House, when the inmates turned out with sticks and staves to stop them. The sailors being as usual quite ready to fight, especially as they imagined some insult was intended to the dead, a scrimmage would have undoubtedly oo- curred had not a person happened to be present, who understood the prejudics and explained it to the officer in charge of the party of sailors.
