Among the intending parsongera by next French mail is Bir Brooke Robertson, our respected Connal at Canton, of whose Hudly disposition and social qualities we are glad to note the Canton Community are teatifying their high appreciation. It would not, however, be out of place—and it is somewhat unfortunate that none of our anofficial M. L. C.'s thought of the matter at last Council meeting-to sek, Whore is the Commission by means of which the vezed question of the Hongkong Blockade was to be for aver set at reat ?; If it bo true as was rumoured some time ago, that Sir Brooke and Mr Hart has proposed to effect

complete oure of this long-standing com- plaint, surely the outline of this proposal ought to have been given to the public, the Chamber of Commerce, or the Legislative Council. Whatever has to be done, must be done quickly, sise the whole affair will have to be "roferred," and will probably go home for future." pigeon-holing" at the Colonial and Foreign Offices. Of course the Blockade will naturally form a part of the Chefoo Convention arrangements; and these have now been under weigh for--how long1

At the Police Court to-day, Leang Ataal, hawker, was charged by P. C. David Stewart (No 82), with picking Mr E. D. Woodford's pocket and stealing a purso containing $8. The prisoner was remand- ed till the 4th Instant in order to give the constable an opportunity to make en- quiries.

Wong Alol, a hawker, was committed for trial on a charge of attering counter. felt cola on the race-course. He said he won the money on the course and was tend ering it to the complainant na payment for a gambling transaction. The defendant was a gambling informer.

James Rosche, a seaman unemployed, was charged with stealing clothes and plotures from a ship's steward named Charles MacLane, residing at the Rome. The complainant gave a long rambling statement, from which it would appear that he had commenced drinking when he left his ship and had missed a lot of things from his bag. His statement was so unre Hable that the Magistrate (Mr May) said he could not place much reliance on the bona fides of his evidence. The defendant said that he had made the complainant's acquaintance after he came on shore, and bad "been at a brothel and at church With him. The complainant was constantly saying that people were robbing him and that the steward of the Homs had taken $25 from bim. He had about 2 dozen nasty pictures and they were hatided round for general

Sir Brooke Robertson has been pro-amin- ently a prudent and painstaking, but by no means an irresolute public Officer. With leas of the good judgmont tempered by con- eillation that he has exhibited, he might have caused estrangement issuing in a rupture of relations wherein to signalize himself by intrepidity or skilful diplomatic address; but services of a tentative charno-«": ter, under the conditious and exigencies of his actual administration, may well be viewed as more meriterious than such as might be rendered conspicuous by sodident or a course of imprudence and arrogancë.

The state of things here with the insident of the earlier portions of Sir Brooke's local career are passing from the memory of even the oldest of the community and becoming

This duty is especially incumbent upon the older residenta and it is under this sense that we advert to some features of a career whose olose is, we trust, still in the distant future, It has been the good fortune of this commu- nity to witness and to profit by the salutary effects of the conservation and steady grasp of affairs that characterized his official course in relations with the great Vice Royalty of the South, from the period of the termination of the joint armed and oivil occupation by the Allied Powers to the present time: While confronted, at the outset, by the most homogenioue, compact and resolute commu- nity of the Empire on the morrow of a pro- tracted repression, by force of arms, whose, legacies of hate threatened lasting estrange ment if not revengeful retaliation.

To an excellent start Jambares made strong running alosely followed by Mr Pant's pair, Suavita and Bay Rum, Marmalade heading the remainder for a short distance, but Mr Murray'spony soon fell astern and was early out of the race. Passing the Stand the leading positions remained unaltered, and nothing noteworthy occurred until rounding the turn for home, at which point only Bay Rum, Suavita, Fiesco, and Jambaree Jambares had any prospects of sucosss. was the first to give way, and Fiesco soon followed sult. An exciting struggle between Bay Rum and Buatita ended in a clever victory for Mr Forbes' pony by a neck, Fiesos gaining third honors three lengths behind Suavita.
