What may be the exact meaning of the second paragraph of the same telegram would It seems bo rather difficult to divine.. the Inference to be gathered from the telegrams of the 27th ultimo that an armistice had been signed is not correct; the telegrams we publish elsewhere as Berting that the general bases of the armistice and peace were to be signed on the 31st ultimo. The same telegram reads very differently in the Shanghai papers, as will be seen by the following comparison. The last sentence in the telegrams, so they appear in the Shanghai papers, does not, we think, require to be connected with the preceding one by the "and"

A SUCCESSFUL Conversazione has been held at the Royalásiatic Society's Rooms at Shanghai, the collection of curiosities being large and varied and attracting a large attendance. The principle feature of the proceedings seems to have been the exhibition and working of a Telo phone by Mr J. D. Bishop, who appears to be energetically and successfully devoting himself to the introduction of that novel instrument into Shanghai. It was originally intended to have the Telephone on exhibition connected with the officer of Mr Kingsmill, but some "delestial" ignoramus having managed to out the connecting wire, the visitors had to content themselves with demonstra- tions of the power of the instrument to convey sounds from one part of the building to the other. Owing no doubt to the faulty construction or setting up of the instrument the experiments were scarcely as successful as they might otherwise have been. Says the Shanghat
