appeared in China. Even as we travelled along, children were brought to us begging we would buy them. One I picked up on a barren mountain road deserted by its parents. In two large cities, Hancheng and Pu-cheng, risings have taken place by people rendered reckless and desperato by seeing their wives and children starving before their faces; and many less wall authenticated but smaller risings of a similar nature are reported in other places. Ia Pu-cheng they dragged the Mandarin from the yamen and beheaded him, because be, with many others, looked well to feather ing their own nests, but cared little for the autfaring of their people.

This state of things I beg you to remember was some months ago. God only knows what the intervening time and bitter winter has added to their sufferings. It has been trying to those who have good homes and every comfort of life; what to those who have had to sell their bosses, their furniture, their all, and then are left without a cash to buy the common artioles of life?

I hope to be returning to Shan-ai in a short time, taking with me sil that can be collected for the relief of some; and shall be glad to render any assistance to some one you may, if able, appoint to carry relief to the sufferers.

Coastwise, the near approach of the Chinese New Year Holidays interferes with business as usual, and there is consequently but little demand for either steamers or sailing vessels.
