The following is an extract from a private lettor describing the Chinese Ambassador's visit to Oxford;-
(L. 0. Fxpress, Dec, 21st.) We understand that the Liverpool Cham ber of Commerce intend to petition the Government to ratify the Chefco Conven- tion.
The Chinese Minister at Berlin has been received by the Emperor, in full atate. The Minister himself was first introduced personally by the Master of the Ceremonies, and afterwards the other members of the All of them made their appear Embassy, ance in the most magnificent dresses. The Minister made a speech in Chinese to the Emperor, which was translated by an inter- preter. The Emperor of China may well be content with the reception of his repre- sentative at Berlin.
An application has been made to the Master of the Rolls on behalf of Mir Vavansour, the inventor of copper rings for Danton shells and bolts, for an lajunotion against Baron Krupp, of Essen, to restrain him from arming the Japanese ironclad Foo Seo with projectiles manufactured on the plaintiff's system. Plalatiff, it was alleged, had obtained a patent for the lavention which defendant was thus infringing. An tojanotion was granted.
**A few days ago we visited Oxford with the Chfuese Ambassador. At the Bodleian, we met with Profcesor Max Muller, and took the opportunity of consulting him about his Oriental studies. The Professor took us over All Souls', and introduced us to his edition of the Vedas. His Excellency Kwob was much pleased with his visit to Oxford. We paid a visit to the Bheldonian Theatre, and listened to an address from Dr Legge on the four last maxims of the Sacred Edict. At the invitation of Dr Sewol, the Vice-Chancellor of the Univer sity, we were introduced at luncheon in the Hall of New College; the Principals

the towns of Manas and Bheeko. Further progress has been arrested by an epidemia among his troops, whlob is stated to have decimated them. The disease, called by the Kashgarians "voobs," bas a great affinity to cholera, and was brought with the army from the captured Doungan Bok-Kult-Begy boing fortress of Tuortan fearful of catching the contagion from the enemy, has stopped his maaroh for a while, Unless further reinforcements arrive for the Chinese, the Emir believes that disease wili scon reduce the disparity of force caused by the breechloaders with which the Celes- tial troops are armed, and he will then ba in a good position to repel the invasion, Should Tro-Moun-taan experience a defeat be would have considerable difficulty in effecting bis escape to China, as the whole population of the subjugated Doungan district would rise up against him. The Chinese Geners! continues his horrible atrocities at Mansa and Toorfan unchecked.
The Vice-Chancellor afterwards conduot ed us over several of the colleges, the Clarendon Press, the Bodielan Library, the rooms of some of the undergraduates, and other places. In the evening we went to a reception at Dr Legge's, where many men of note were presented to His Excellenby.
The next morning, accompanied by Dr went to the Legge, the Ambassader University, where he was so fortunate as to see the degrees of Master and Bachelor being conferred. When the Vice-Chancellor was relieved from bis part of the ceremony, he conducted us to another part of the University, where examinations, written vica voce, were being held for the same degrees. We afterwards visited the Museum and the Observatory,
At the latter, wo were so fortunate as to be able to get a view of Venus when just passing the meridian. The planet had the appearance of a half moon, which much astonished the Ambassador, as well as the fact that Professor Pritchard had been able to show it to us ja broad daylight. Kwoh Ta-jen doly recorded the fact of his having witnessed the phenomenon at 8 pm, on the 20th November; and the Professor said that parbaps some 2,000 years hence the fact might be called in question, and require to ba veritied in the same manner as some of the astronomical phenomena recorded in the Shuking had been tested and proved correct by him. I cannot say that, in my opinion, his proofs are much to be relied on, for, assing that the Chinese have some- times put in an intercalary month where Due ought to be, it seems imposible it could be proved that such and such a day, e.g., of Yu's time, corresponded with our B. C., x.y.z., month and day."-Y. C. 1). News.
