VICTORIA REGATTA. TWENTY-SECOND MEETING.. Thanks apparently to the speelst favour of the clerk of the weather, the first day's proceedings of the Regatta have been a far greater success than could have been anticipated yesterday. The morning broke comparatively fine and promising, scireum- stance which, after the pouring rains of the last few weeks, must have been alike satisfactory to the Regatta Committes and the community. There were seven rowing races, two sailing races for open bosta-one for men-of-war's boats and the other for merchant ships' boats—and a yacht race.
The Fame, kindly leat for the occasion by the Hongkong and Whampoa Dook Company, left Peddar's Wharf shortly after 12.30, taking a small party of residents on board the flag-ship, which, as on previous counsions, was one of the P. &.0. vessels running on the Yokohama time-to-day the Sunda, which happened to be in barbour, being placed at the disposal of the guests. The prisoner was indicted for stealing watob, a allver chain, two brass keys and chamole watch case, on the 24th November last; he was also charged with receiving the same. The facts were very simple. The prosecutor was walking in Taipingshan when he had his pocket picked. He re- ported this to the Police, when Lokong No 197 traced the property to the posssssion of the prisoner.
The prisoner pleaded not guilty, Mr Francis, instructed by Mr Bharp, the Crown Solicitor, officiated again for the at torney Genaral.

The 1st prisoner said his boat was engaged as stated, but he did, not steal the fins. They were stolen by the shopman them- selves, who pat them into the hatch against his will, and he was trying to throw them up from the place of concealment when the Folice came. This accounted for his being found in the hatch. The only inmates of the boat were himself, his wife and daughter, while there were four shopmen on board In charge of the shark's fas. If he had stolen any of the goods, he would have surely been seen by the shopmen. It was the shopmen themselves who stole the fins and put them into the fore-hatch,
