nothing of linguistic studies, has led to the accumulation of important stores of inform ation, rendering some such channel of pub. licly as 16 now provided extremely desir able; and contributions of much interest may fairly be looked for from the members of the foreign consular services, the Chinese Customs corps, and the missionary body, among whom a high degree of Chinese scholarship is now assiduously cultivated, and who are severally represented in the first number of the Review by papers highly creditable to their respective authore. In a paper on Dr. Leggo's Che King, by the Rev. E. J. Eitel, to which the place of honour is deservedly given, an excellent summary is presented of the chronological problems and arguments involved in con- nexion with the important work. Some China translations from Chinese novels and plays arð Mariya by both sccuracy and freshmess of style and an account of the career of the Chinese post-statesman of the eleventh century, Mr. E. 0. is not only historically valuable, but is also distingulated by its literary grace. Beside notices of new books relating to China and the East, which will be a useful feature of the Review, I carried out with punctuality Lat Tal and detall, we are glad to notice that Mseanee "Notes" and "Quarias” are destined to
Moorhen find a place in Its pages also. It is to be
Mosquito hoped that, tals opening for contributions Victor Emanuel on Chinese subjects may evoke a similar degree of literary zeal to that which was displayed during the lifetime of its prede sessor in the field, and that the China Review may receive the support necessary to insure its continuance.
