I saw that the mortar had been taken out between the bricks about a foot and a half in length and about an Inch and a half deep. On looking around 1 saw that the ball wire in a corner of the cell had been broken; the piece broken off, about 2 feet 6 luclios long, was auspend ed from the wire from which it bad been broken. On taking down the piece broken off, (the samo I now produse), I saw that the end broken off had been ground to a point and this point had some mortar ad- hering to it. My object was to see that all was quiet, and that the turnkeys and guards were doing their duty. The last witness reported something to me, in consequence of which I visited the prisoner in the soli. tary cell in which he was then looked up. On reaching the cell, I turned on the bulls eye light through the trap in the cell door. The prisoner was lying down. I called to the prisoner several times in a loud tone to get up; he did not get up. I unlocked the cell door and went in. The prisoner sat up and I told him to stand up, he did observed that the back wall of the cell had been tampered with. The back wall is an outer wall abutting on one of the yards of the Gaol. I took the prisoner outside the door and thoroughly tosrahed him. I found nothing upon him. I then examined the cell, and I found that the mortar had been dug out between the bricks, at one particular part of the wall, to the depth in some places of sight and half inches, and in other places about six inches. I produce a stick which I inserted into the brisk work to its entire length, and I also produce a paper shewing the murface of the patch of brick work which had been demolished.

Mr Bedell Le Yun, First. Interpreter at the Police Court, was called. He was the interpreter at the Gaol Commission hold by Messes Russell and Stewart to enquire into the circumstances attending the prisoner's attempt to break out of prison. The pri- Boner had stated before the Commission that he was ill-treated by Mr Tomlin, who was very harsh to him, and he wanted to die rather than remain in the Gaol, When he was alok, and could not work, be was made to work. When he could not do it, the turnkey reported him, and Mr Tom, lin put him into a dark cell for one week, and kept him on a rice and water diet. GAOL DISCIPLINE. To the Editor of the CHINA MAIL.” Hongkong, 21st July, 1877. SIR,It is freely said in many circles where "gup" does circulate that the molly soddling, non-flogging policy of Mr Pope Hennessy is beginning to bear fruit. The discipline in the gaol is said to be gradually getting into a demoralized state, and it is no uncommon thing for experienced and know- ing prisoners to shirk work on the ground that they now incur no risk of the rattan being laid amartly across their back. What former Governors have succeeded in doing viz, suppressing crime, reducing the numbers in gaol, and making the Hongkong Prison a model institution-scoms fated to be soon undone; and it is even said that we shall be uncommonly lucky if this style of conducting disastrous results matters does not lead both in and out of the Gaol. May I express a hope that something should be done to show to His Excellency the trouble to which his present course of action must inevitably lead
