of Hongkong, aged 42 years.

The feeling in favour of a Commission appears to be on the increase. It is felt that the evidence taken would not only be of considerable service to the Govern. ment, but would place it and the com- munity generally en rapport with the views and feelings on the matter of the Chinese, who would doubtless be able to offer some useful suggestions as to the best means for checking the chopping. It will not be forgotten that the Chinese before the public here as readily as any cannot bring their views and grievances other section of the community. There are probably not half-a-dozen Chinaren in the Colony who could write a letter fit for publication in an English newspaper, The Government itself, however, is in the best position for deciding as to the desirability of appointing a Commission, and, for our own part, we have very Ht tle feeling on the matter.

WHETHER England will get involved in Russia's war in the sauce of Russian Christianity, civilisation, and humanity against the anti-human Turk is a question upon which different opinions may be form of many good men and women in England, ed. It is clear, however, that, to the grief

The following was the distribution according to the latest home papers. Rupert Sultan, most powerful vessel in Mediterranean Bwiftsure, and Devastation. The last in the waters. The channel squadron consists of but four iron-olade, under Vice-Admiral Seymour, Minotaur, flagship, Black Prince, Defence, and Resistance. At Portsmouth and other home ports, there are many vessels commissioned and ready for ses and for the protection of the coasts, while three powerful new iron-clads, Temeraire, Dread- nought, and Inflexible, will be shortly ready for active service. On the North American and Weat Indian stations there are half-a dozen corvettes and sloops, under Vios- Admiral Sir Cooper Key in the Bellerophon On the West coast of Africa and at the modore Sullivan. On the way home from Cape of Good Hope there are about a dozen ressola, none very powerful, under Com- the Cape there is the Flying Squadron of four frigates Immortalité, Topaze, Narcissus and Newcastle, under Admiral Rowley Lam bert, which, it will be remembered, passed through here on the way home from Chins. On the East India station, there are ten frigates, corvettes, and gun-vessels under the command of Rear-Admiral Corbett 0.B., who has just succeeded Rear Admiral Sir R. Macdonald, K 0.8.1, in the Un- daunted. On the Australasian station, " Commodore Hoskyns has five corvettes and other vessels under his orders.
