THE opium dealers of Bengal, says the Englishman, are alarmed at the superahund- ant quantity of the opium orop Sixty five thousand chests, Bengal drug, weft many factured by Government last year, of which only forty-eight thousand chests are to be sold during the year, and there will thus be large surplus to add to the reserve stook. The prospects of the crop this season, are equally favourable. Now, as opium will not keep, and the price is regulated by the supply, the dealers are anxious to know the intentions of Government with regard to the reservestock, which will be more than equalto the quantity annually offered for sale. Dealers in Bengal opium are in a peculiar position. The drag is a strict Government monopoly, as to growth and sale, whereas the cultivation. of Malwa opium on the Western side of India duty. In addition, Bengal oplam dealers. have to contend against competition in China. from dealers in Malwa, and ales from Chinese grown opium. Malwa is said to be supereeding Bengal opium almost entirely in the northern ports of China, where there is the largest demand for the drug.
