The depth of water is 5 fathoms, and the rise and fall of ordinary tides is 16 feet. The beach is sandy with a very, gradual slope, and there are no jetties. Small vessels and large boats are loaded and discharged in a creek which is dry at low water. This creek runs into the sea at the eastern end of the town, and extends in a westerly direction, so that part of the town is built upon what may be called a narrow spit between the creek and the sea.
