Miscellaneous,

We learn that the Ti-po of one of the villages on the west side of the Island is rendering himself rather obstructive to the work of education. As our readers are aware, part of the educational scheme of the Government is to grant a bonus of $25 or $15 to each of the masters of those village schools that pass the annual examination in a satisfactory manner. It seems that the master of the village school referred to was awarded 815 at the last examination, whereupon the Ti po preferred a modest "squeeze" of 85 Claims against the Palestine must be sent from the sum. We are perfectly certain that nothing of this kind will be permit ted in Hongkong Ti-pos are, no doubt, very important personages in their own villages, but we cannot afford to have the educational scheme rendered abortivo to accommodate them in ocrrupt and un- lawful practices. If the Tipo does not take care he may find that a little money or hard labour is extorted from him in- stead of from the schoolmaster.
