A LATE number of the Melbourns Argus gives the annexed particulars of a new appliance for the protection of life at nea It is described sa consisting of canFRA CONES Bunday sight inches broad at the top and tapering 1132 gradually downwards, with hand lines attached. These cones are filled with cork, | and, fixed to boats, convert them of an ordinary construction into life-boats. They are on ordinary occasions carried inside and used for seats, but when boats are used for saving life in boisterous weather, they are transferred outside, and then the bosts become, it is said, absolutely unsinkable. add fully 25 per cent to the carrying capa city of a boat. They would act as fenders and effectually prevent capsizing. Should the latter contingency occur, the hand lines on the cones would be of great service, as they could be easily caught by those who chanced to be thrown into the water, The plan has been invented by Melbourne are, and seems simple enough and inex pensive when compared with the cost of other life saving appliances. Messrs Grice, Sumner & Co., of Melbourne, have fitted the cones to the boats of their ship the Delmira, and the matter is worth the at- tention of nautical men.
