But we do hear on very fair authority that much opposition is felt la certain quarters to the practice of making trips into the interior, though we are not In A position to say whether any actual steps have been taken towards interfering with it. In Japan regulations have been Issued by the Government, by which all foreign sportsmen are bound. The first rule is that every foreigner must take out license, which will cost him ten dollars to begin with It is forbidden to shoot game between sunset and sunrise, and also to kill any bird which cannot be eaten, Fur thermore, & sportman may not encroach upon any enclosure, even if marked only by a cord or temporary fance, nor may ke aboot in any city or town; which last regulation would be a very vexatious one if applied to China, wherh the interiors of so many towns are as wild and desolate as the outlying country, and form excellent cover for birds. It is said that the regulations are likely to be well received by foreigners, not being in any way too stringent. Indeed, with the exception of the ten-dollar licenso, and the rule which applies to cities, the regulations go no further than the com- monest precautions which would be taken by any portamantiu any part of the world. It might be as well if sport in China were almilarly legalised, rather than that it should be the object of covert opposition
from the mandarins.
