Opium show- ed an increase of nearly 1,000 chests, while cotions were more largely import ed, to the extent of 84,000 pieces, than in the previous year. At Fooshow the value of the merchandise imported and exported during the year amounted to £5,633,000, besides treasure to the value of £2,097,947. There was a decrease of five in the number of vessels, but an increase of 12,380 tons in the tonnage. Nearly all the steamers, and nearly half the sailing vessels were under the Bri tish flag. At Tamsui and Keelung the increase of trade in 1875 amounted in value to Taels 815,017, At Amoy the trade showed a slight in orease over that of 1874; the Consul states "the amount is so very small that it is scarcely worth mention; but taking into consideration the very heavy lekin taxes that still continue to be imposed upon the trade of the port, it is a matter of astonishment that it has not retro- graded." At Swatow the value of both imports and exports was somewhat above that of 1874, the total increase amounting to £359,263. At Canton there is a balance in favour of 1875 of £851,540, which would have been great- er, but for the difference of exchange.

Sir Brooke Robertson concludes his report with some remarks that are so startling and important—although the facts he states have all been long” forced upon the attention of residents in China

that we shall be excused a lengthened reference to them. Sir Brooks, after pointing out that the Foreign Customs, from which his returns are obtained, by no means represent the trade of the port in foreign goods and produce, and, that owing to the objection of the native Custom-house to give any information. on the subject, probably because duties are paid there under a system of com- mutation instead of strict enforcement, it thus being rendered inconvenient to On the alat.
