**We regret to announce, that by a deplorable accident on board H. M. S. Newcastle, while on her voyage from Hong. kong, Mr Wingfield, a midshipman, and three sailors were drowned. It appeare that one of the sailors whilst engaged in hauling in the log acoldentally fell over board, and Mr Wingfield, who was looking on, jumped overboard to bis assistance but

to no avail and both sank. In the endes vour to rescue them, two sailors were drowned, thus making a loss of four lives. The sea was rather rough at the time and the vessel was going at a good speed.'

It would appear that there are some odrcumstances connected with this most unfortunate accident which call for some explanation. Private advices from Sing apore imply that some difference of opinion. exists (to use 20 stronger term) as to whether or not everything was done on board the Newcastle that might have been done to save the drowning officer and men. If there is the slightest ground for doubting that the utmost efforts were put forth to effect the rescue of the gallant fellows who have met their death while endeavouring to save another, that le a matter which will
