CHINA AFFAIRS AT HOME. (From our London Correspondent.)

London, May 12th, 1876. Since my last little has occurred on this side of special interest to readers in China ; complaints are made in every direction of badness of business more especially with the East, with which it is almost impossible to conduct trade with a chance of success in face of the complications resultant from de- preciation of silver.

At their meeting on

The frequent interruptions to our tole graphic communication with Pagoda An- charage ate, we believe, likely to cease, So long as the thieves could secretly dispose of the stolen wire it was, of course, a diBoult matter to put a stop to the con- stant pilfering of material; but, as we understand that the receivors of the plun- der have been at last discovered by the native police, and are now undergoing examination (torture) in the Cily, it is fair, to assume that the robberies complain, સર્વે will be effectually ohooked. As our readers are doubtless aware, the line is now the property of the Provincial Govern ment-hence the increased vigour of the authorities!

Referring to the native trouble near Swatow, mention of which was made in our last issue, we hear of further disturbs cos, and that the Magistrate at Chang Poo, in the Chang Chow profecture, has been taken by the rioters and quartered. It is regard ed by the officials here se a rebellion, and it is feared that it will become a very serious matter. We also understand, on good authority, that the district city of 8th instant at Berlin, the Deutsche Bank an shao Woo, in the Shao Woo prefecture, nounced their having closed their branches has been captured by a band of Rebels in China. It is certainly discourag- ing to and that well organised and influen tial establishments are thus obliged to retire from the China field and that in doing so with considerable loss, they can only con gratulate themselves that a worse thing has not happened to them through continuing longer in no unfruitful and unsatisfactory

a field.

I am informed that a change of some im. portance in the manner in which business connected with China is being conducted in London is becoming apparent. It is in some respects similar to that which came over business in China seme ten or twelve years ago; when trade begun to pass away from the comparatively limited number of large firms, who had to a great extent had a monopoly of it, into the hands of smaller houses, who starting upon a basis more
