Trudner's Oriental Record contains the fol lowing notice of the China Review :—"This is the title of a publication, the first number of which has lately reached us from Hong. kong, where it has been set on foot as in some respecta A continuation of Notes and Queries on China and Japan, the extinction of which useful serial a year or two ago has boo much regretted in Europe as well as In China. Thepresent publication, judging by the number now before us, is intended to Occupy a position, as regards China and the neighbouring countries, somewhat similar to that which has been filled in India by the Calcutta Review. The great degres of at- tention that has been bestowed of late years upou the investigation of Chinese literature, Antiquities, and social developments, to say nothing of linguistio studies, has led to the segumulation of important stores of inform- ation, rendering some such channel of pub- licity as is now provided extremely desir. able; and contributions of much interest asy fairly be looked for from the members of the foreign consular services, the Chinese Curs corps, and the missionary body, ong whom a high degree of Chinese scholarship is now assiduously onltivated, and who are severally represented in the first number of the Review by papers highly areditable to their respective authors. In 4 paper on Dr. Legge's She King, by the Rev. E. J. Hitel, to which the place of honour is deservedly given, an excellent summary is presented, of the chronological problems and arguments involved in con- nexion with this important work. Some translations from Chinese novels and plays are marked by both accuracy and freshness of style; and an account of the career of the Chinese poet-statesman of the deventh century, Sa Tung-p'o, by Mr. E. C. Bowra, is not only historically valuable, but is also distinguished by its literary grace. Boside. notices of now books relating to China and the East, which will be a useful feature of the Review, li carried out with punctuality and detail, we are glad to notice that "Notes" and "Quarios" are destined to find a place in its pages also. It is to be hoped that this opening for contributiona on Chinese subjects may evoke a similar degres of literary real to that which was Cap Horn displayed during the Hfetime of its prede- Charité cessor in the fold, and that the China Review Lizzie may receive the support necessary to insure Rubicon la continuanes.
