The remand case in which one Lai As, & coolie, was charged with stealing an iron bar from the Military Barracks at Stanley, came on again. After some evidence being taken, the prisoner was sentenced to one month's lumprisonment with hard labour, and the witness Cheung Aati, a watchman of the said Barracks, was fined $20, la default 6 weeks' imprisonment with bard labour, for giving wilful isine evidence.
ASSAULT,
Chang Akwai, a.ooolie, was charged with B&Bauiting one Mak Amow, a stone coolie in the employ of Messrs Lammert, Atkinson, Co. It appeared from the evidence that the complainant gave a man into oustody yesterday for assault, and the man was Abed $a by Mr Bussell. On leaving the Court, and when near to his master's house, he noticed the defendant and other conlies who called out to beat him. The defendant struck him on the head and right shoulder. The defendant was immediately seized by the complainant and was given into custody. Mr May sentenced the defendant to 21 days' imprisonment with hard labour, and to be exposed in stocks near the one of the offence for 2 hours, and at the expiration of bis imprisonment to find security in one householder $10 keep the peace for 12 months

the other regard must be had to securing the defendant's appearance. It was per- fectly anderstood that in refusing bail, to the defendant in this case, the Magiftrate did not care, in so important a case, to take the responsibility upon himself and had elected therefore that the higher Court should give its opinion on the question of bail. His Lordship had red through the depositions very carefully and had come to the conclusion that the defendant must be admitted to bail, but he would take care that the ends of justice would not be de- footed. He would admit the defendant to bail, but it must be in a very large amount. He would fir bail for the defendant him sale in $40,000, with two suraties of $20,000 each, or tour of $10,000 each, or Bre of $8000.
Mr Kingsmill observed that he was not as yet prepared to give so large a mum, and and was taken aback at the amount. He would consult his client. He supposed it did not matter how the suroties were di- vided no long as the $40,000 were mad up. His Lordship understood to assent to this.

Up to the moment of writing this there have been no receipts yet for the month, bilst to the corresponding date last year there had been 8,888 obeste.
