Annam, according to native reports, chow at the SE, corner is visited by junks from all quarters, more especially those trading to Anuum and Cochin-China. The two last-named soon indeed the mostimport- ant porte in Hainan, in the Chinese idea, but it is unsafe to assume too much as to their' capabilities, until they have been visited by Europeans. The only towns on navigable rivers, which appear to call for notice, aro: Ling-tui, now being besieged by the Li savages, and Man-chow, which is the seat of the nutive Piece Goods manufactories. It is situated about 15 miles inland from the East coast, and does a large trade with the other ports and towns on the island. An inspection of the musters brought back will give a good idea of the business done in this

Tan writ of certiorari applied for by Mr Kingmill was turned into lectiorari by a printer's blunder, in our report of yester- day's hearing of Mr Duncan's case.
THE German Corvette Fineta, which arrived here resterday from Hondulu, roports having encountered a severe gale of wind on the night of the 25th and morning of the 26th ultimo, when she lost three boats, fore-topmast and jibboom. The galo za pidly lucreased to hurricane force and the Vineta had to be hove to, having previously been running before the wind under bare poles. -
In view of the many drawbacks attending trade with Hoihow, it certainly seems worth while to ascertain whether some better port could not be selected. Native information is so inaccurate, that I place but little reliance in any secount I am unable to verify. But if the reports regarding Tung-sui, Tam-chow, Yai-chow and Wan-chow be accurate, they should offer far more inducements to foreign, trade than does Hoi-how. The one thing in THE Japan Herald publishes a telegram favour of the latter is that it is close to the seat of the local government, while (speak-stating that a revolution has taken place in ing also on native information) the West America, and that the mintage and shipment and South coasts are remarkably unhealthy. of dollars has been stopped. But there can be little doubt that Pak-hei is worth ten times as much to trade, under existing circumstanech. Should mining ever be resumed in Hainan, Hoi-how, or an alternative port, might then become impor tant in a specific way.
Tua Superientendent of the E. E. A. and China Telegraph Company informs us that communication between Singapore and We were

With respect to mines the report unaware that anything had happened to states that the metaliferous districts of the branch of the Company's line running Hainan may be roughly described as to Australia, but we are glad to learn that lying entirely in the western half of the iland Copper mines are said to exist it has been repaired. It is to be hoped near Shih-lu-shau, some 30 miles from that communication will also shortly be Hoitow, a small place on the north-west re-established along the Company's line

man's speeches are interesting as showing the state of Banking with the Far East during the past year.
There is little al. Lusion to Chins specifically, but of course in financial matters India and China are se intimately connected that what applies to the one is applicable to a great extent also to the other. The chief causes of the na satisfactory state of matters have been the depression in the India trade, and the de preciation in Silver, which by the way affects the price of your Mexicans as much as that of Rupees. The latter is apparently owing as much to the general, dulness of trade as to the demonetiution of Silver by Germany and other European countrie The prospects of Banking in the East generally are, however, looked upon as fa vourable.
